The use of social media has constantly been growing over the last decade. According to recent statistics, there are 2.77 billion social media users globally (Statista, 2019).

E-commerce companies need to be aware of social media’s importance as well as the opportunities it creates, such as offering new and diverse ways for building a customer base and retaining previous customers.

Understanding the importance of social media in e-commerce is the first step. But how are we going to utilize these platforms?

At this point, constructing a social media strategy is of utmost importance. As it is also valid for other aspects of business life, establishing a strategy before getting into action is a prudent approach.

Based on this, we will provide some suggestions on social media strategy.

Starting with limited number of social media platforms would be a preferable choice for companies new to this area. In doing so, you can get familiarised with different aspects of specific platforms and build enough experience before moving on to other platforms.

What comes next is determining your priorities and setting your targets for your business’s social media presence.

This will help you find out the most suitable ways you can benefit from these platforms.

Sharing high-quality photos of your products and services, as well as placing company logo on your posts would contribute to your professional image and help you create a consistent tone.

Visuality could help you attract attention in social media. But getting real attention, which contributes to your business profits lies within creating and sharing informative, useful, thoughtful and conversion-oriented contents.

Building relationship with your audience and responding to them in a timely manner also plays a crucial role in a successful social media presence.

You need to establish a two way traffic between your social media accounts and your website/e-commerce marketplace.

On the one hand, you could share promotional posts, offer pre-order opportunities and modest discounts, and use paid advertising options of social media platforms.

On the other hand, you need to place social media icons on your webpage and on any content you post outside of social media for creating traffic towards your social media accounts.

Creating a strategy before diving into social media is a must in creating social media presence of your company.

It is more meaningful to start with one or two platforms, getting familiar with them, and then moving to other social media platforms.

In order to attract attention, you need to share high quality photos, build an institutional image, and create informative, useful, timely posts.

From time to time you could use promotional posts and benefit from paid advertising to reach more people.
